It is by the flick of a switch that a room plunges into darkness or breaks into bright light! In building wiring the operation of electric lights, permanently connected equipment or electrical outlets need a switch which is called the light switch.

 How it Works-

The electricity to the light sockets is cut into two. The switch restores the circuit when the two wires are re connected by a piece of metal. The electrons flow into the sockets, light the bulb and flow back to their source somewhere to the other side of the meter.

 Types of light switches-

  • Wall mounted switches are usually seen in residential and commercial buildings and have a plastic, metal or ceramic cover to prevent sudden contact with the live terminals of the switch. The first light switch was the one using the quick break technology.
  • There maybe single or multiple switches intended for indoor or outdoor use.

Power saving switches can be classified on the basis of variations in design. The pushbutton switch has two buttons that alternatively close and open the contacts. Toggle makes a snapping sound and is manually actuated by a mechanical lever, handle or rocking mechanism. An illuminated switch is one which can be located in the dark by the user due to an internal light source. The Rocker is an alternative design to the toggle. It sits flush to the wall and can be activated rocking a flat broad lever. There are Tamper resistant ones found in school corridors where the circuit must not be switched off accidentally. Previously there were Mercury switches but these are no longer used. Switches may also be operated by a pull chain or a cord especially in the utility areas of homes. A dimmer switch controls the brightness by reducing the average voltage applied to the lamp. There are electronic switches which can be operated by merely touching or waving ones hand nearby. Multiway switches are those in which two or more switches are interconnected.
