You Are Here:IT Software – Parental Control Software

The internet is the most wonderful technology given to us, it literally gives us the world at our fingertips. But unfortunately, the fingertips can belong to young children, and whilst they are surfing on the net, it could happen very easily that they are exposed to inappropriate material. They could even for example, accidentally reveal personal information about their own or their parent’s credit card data. In these instances, it is wise to consider IT software in the form of parental control software.

Unfortunately, as children grow older, it becomes much more difficult to supervise what they watch on the internet, simply because you cannot always be with them in any case. By the time they are adolescents, they could well be engaging in the viewing of pornographic material or even chatting on line with potential and dangerous predators. It so happens that they might even post photos of themselves on line and even provide information that could allow paedophiles or thugs to approach them.

Children should be protected
By being involved with your child’s on line activities, you do help to limit some of the risks. You could keep the computer in the living room or just sometimes show sufficient interest to keep them resisting the temptation to go to the forbidden sites. But often, it is a real problem and sometimes it is impossible to know what your child is being exposed to.
Fortunately, there are a variety of software and hardware tools that can monitor your child’s internet access. Some are very cheap, some are even free. Filtering software works in the way that it blocks specific websites or specific keywords. Parents can specify these. For instance, a list of pornographic or inappropriate sites is provided by the software vendor which can be updated from their web site. If your child tries to access one of these web sites he or she will get an ‘HTTP 404 Page Not Found’ or similar message. You can used these filters to block access to certain types of Internet traffic like instant messaging, newsgroups, e-mail, or peer-to-peer hosting.
Monitor your child’s activities
Unfortunately, the filters aren’t perfect and it is practically impossible for a database to be completely up-to-date. This is because new web sites are coming onto the internet all the time. There is another type of software that records all your child’s computer activities. It shows the sites visited, the emails sent or received, the programmes that were run and sometimes even individual key strokes. Another option to try is to install software which restricts computer use to certain times in a day. The computer will shut off at certain times or when a certain amount of data has been downloaded. Windows does have built-in facilities for this, but configuring it requires quite a bit of expertise that sometimes the average user doesn’t have.
